Garibaldi expects a “profound and interesting” debate over political reform

The president of the Senate, Garibaldi Alves Filho, said, on Wesdnesday (27), that he is satisfied with the government’s decision of sending to the National Congress suggestions for the political reform. The proposals – six bills and one amend to the Constitution - were delivered to Garibaldi by the ministers of Justice, Tarso Genro, and Institutional Relations, José Múcio.
- We will have an interesting and profound debate - predicted the senator.
He also mentioned the possibility of discussing these changes in a joint committee – formed by senators and deputies – after a request made by senator Renato Casagrande (PSB-ES). In order to vote this request, it will be necessary to negotiate a joint session with the Chamber of Deputies’ president Arlindo Chinaglia (PT-SP).
Casagrande said he wants to see his request approved in September, so that, in November, some of the items of the political reform would be voted.
- If the Congress works accordingly, the government’s propositions will be dispensable. The Parliament should be a protagonist in the process – said Casagrande.
José Múcio said that this new effort of changing electoral laws will be a “partnership” between the Executive and the Legislative Powers. He also stated that the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies could have, together, more chances of coming to a viable proposal than they would, acting alone.
