Up one levelSouth America Integration
One of the new challenges posed to the Brazilian civil society is to follow-up, monitor and intervene in the South American countries’ integration. As of 2010, the Mercosur Parliament – the legislative authority of regional representation – will rest on the participation of Brazilian representatives elected in direct elections (currently, the Brazilian National Congress designates 18 representatives). The establishment and implementation of that Parliament, jointly with the South American Regional Infrastructure Integration Initiative (IIRSA), demand the civil society’s participation and intervention to avoid a process that disregards the interests of populations in the region’s countries.
